Irene Hannon wraps up her Code of Honor series with the heart-thumping “Dark Ambitions.”
When Rick Jordan finds blood on his property and clues that lead to a missing Army buddy, he hires private investigator Heather Shields to look for his missing friend, Boomer.
As Rick and Heather dig deeper and deeper into the case, they discover much more intrigue — mysterious deaths, manipulation, fraud, corruption and malfeasance — and a blooming relationship.
Hannon always does a great job of developing an intense, action-packed romantic thriller, and “Dark Ambitions” is no exception. Filled with so many twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the very end, this story combines great character development with incredible story telling.
And with Heather’s job at the private investigation firm Phoenix, Inc., Hannon allows us to revisit old friends from her other series. She does a great job of developing very real and relatable characters — both Heather and Rick struggle with overcome past pains and second guessing choices they have made.
She also includes other great themes like just doing the best you are capable of under the circumstances; dealing with fear; not second guessing every decision; and the importance of making our very best choices.
“Dark Ambitions” only includes a few brief, mild references to God — mostly in offering quick prayers for help and guidance.
This book could be read as a standalone, but I’d recommend reading the rest of the series’ installments. Fans of authors like Lynette Eason, Colleen Coble and Mary Higgins Clark will love this book, as well as fans of strong female characters like you’ll find in novels by Cara Putman.
Five stars out of five.
