Lynn H. Blackburn offers another intense romantic thriller with “One Final Breath,” the third installment of her “Dive Team Investigations” series.
When a teen boy is shot and killed on the lake while Homicide Investigator and Dive Team Captain Anissa Bell and her fellow investigators and friends are also relaxing on the lake, a case from Anissa’s past is brought to the forefront. She and her fellow investigator (and possible love match) Gabe Chavez must determine what this case has to do with her 13-year-old case while keeping each other safe from an unknown killer.
They must also overcome past failures and traumas in their lives to be willing to give romance a chance.
“One Final Breath” is a non-stop, action-packed story filled with murder, kidnappings, explosions, shootings, stabbings and stalkers, all while offering just enough romance to curl your toes. Blackburn always does a fantastic job of developing her characters, giving them deep back stories with relatable issues. She also offers little surprises, by bringing in other author’s characters in supporting roles — like Lynette Eason’s Brady St. John in this story.
Besides being a great thriller, though, “One Final Breath” provides a number of great themes, like dealing with and overcoming your own perceived failures and feeling at fault; letting go of grudges; opening up to those who love and support us; through Jesus’ sacrifice we are uncondemnable; and God can do big things in our lives so don’t put Him in a box, trying to limit Him.
This book can easily be read as a standalone, but I’d encourage you to read the other installments. Fans of Lynette Eason, Patricia Bradley, Terri Blackstock and Sandra Orchard will enjoy “One Final Breath.”
Five stars out of five.
