“He poured out the shielding loving, the forgiveness, the hope. He set it as a beacon before the man. And once more he emitted his heart’s cry. Come home.” Thomas Locke has offered up a mind-blowing novel with “Trial Run,” a first in the “Fault Lines” series by the man who is also known as popular author Davis Bunn. You will need to put on your thinking cap is you read this incredibly amazing, yet deeply scientific, novel. “Trial Run” deals with two factions who are attempting similar goals: the study of human consciousness and whether it can be separated from Newtonian physics and cross the nature of time — a process they call “transitioning” and “ascending.” Adding to the deeply scientific nature is Trent Major, a student in theoretical physics who teams up with business student Shane Schearer. Prodded on by visions and messages from his future self, Trent forms a partnership with the lovely Shane to share his work on quantum computing — work which eventually makes its way to one of the “ascending” factions. Locke’s first “Fault Lines” installment is an intriguing, amazing read, one that will force you to question your ideas of human awareness and the concept of time, and the use of these for either good or bad. If these concepts can truly become a reality, should they be used as a weapon, or only for the good of man? “Trial Run” is filled with many interesting and fascinating characters. It also touches on the themes of remorse and guilt, hope and trust, and the power of love and its ability to act as a shield and protector. Because it is a little lofty (meaning deeply academic) at times for the non-scientific reader, I will give this book four and a half stars out of five. Trying to understand his ways is an exercise in futility. All we can do is our best and then trust that whatever happens, he’s present and in charge.” Author Irene Hannon steps away from her usual suspense genre with “Hope Harbor,” the first installment in a new series. Michael Hunter is a CEO of a Chicago non-profit organization and is looking for major life answers while taking a respite in the coastal community of Hope Harbor, Oregon. On his first day in town he meets several people who will change his life — Charley, the mysterious taco truck operator who offers him free tacos and free inspiration in the form of Job 14:7-9; town recluse Anna Williams, who shockingly offers Michael a place to stay in her home’s annex; and the beautiful Tracy Campbell, who he literally runs into and who is struggling to keep her family’s cranberry farm afloat (no pun intended!). And both Michael and Tracy must learn to let go of the secret pain in both of their pasts and learn to trust in the power of love again. As one character says: “Love can survive setbacks, you know.” What follows is not just a lovely romantic tale, but a story filled with many deep truths: the power of forgiveness; dealing with grief and guilt; signs, symbols and omens; the ability to trust that God always has a plan and the ability to see God’s hands in everything; finding and believing in hope; reaching out and helping others is deeply rewarding; and the fact that it is never too late for redemption. The book is filled with many moments of silliness, as well as seriousness, but Hannon also packs so many awesome nuggets in “Hope Harbor” (like “Let’s do our best and leave the outcome to God”) that the reader is left feeling happy and inspired and encouraged. She takes us on a beautiful journey as we watch Michael, Tracy, Anna and pregnant 16-year-old Grace grow into their God-ordained destinies. This is a lovely book and I can’t wait to read the next installment. Five stars out of five.
