Sheriff Ben Logan plans to meet with Tony Jackson, a former gambler who is now the CFO of Maxwell Industries — a company who most recently has found success in manufacturing guns. But when Ben shows up to find out what information Tony has for him, Tony is dying from a gunshot wound and makes Ben promise to protect his sister, Leigh. What follows is a whirlwind story of scary and intense events, and the wonder at who is the cause of each horrific situation.
Dr. Leigh Somerall has returned to her hometown with her son, TJ. As one tragedy after another hits, Ben and Leigh must decide if someone is targeting Leigh — or Ben. As they walk cautiously around their past together — a relationship 10 years ago brought to an end by his father, Ben works diligently to keep his promise to Tony to protect to Leigh.
In this book, criminal profiler Taylor Martin from the series’ first installment also makes a brief appearance, as well as Detective Olivia “Livy” Reynolds, who just happens to be Ben’s cousin.
Patricia Bradley’s “A Promise to Protect” is a fast-paced, exciting, can’t-put-it-down story filled with characters dealing with guilt, shame and blame. Several characters, but particularly Leigh and Ben, must overcome a feeling of never being good enough, and seeing past their former mistakes. Most importantly, “A Promise to Protect” is a story of forgiveness — forgiving one’s self, forgiving each other, and seeking and depending on forgiveness from God. As one character points out, “Call God. He’s always home and you never get a busy signal.”
Bradley’s novel is not just an excellent suspense thriller with shocking revelations and twists and turns, but it is a story filled with messages of hope and redemption on an even deeper level.
I hope the series sees a third installment!
Five stars out of five.
