Lynette Eason wraps up her Elite Guardian series about a group of female bodyguards with “Chasing Secrets,” which takes on the story of the mysterious Elite member Haley Callaghan.
Haley has a heart of gold and always jumps to help those in need, especially troubled teens. When she gets pulled into the lives of 16-year-old Zeke Hampton and his sickly brother Micah, her life is forever changed. Add to that an abrupt introduction to her past, much of which she doesn’t remember, learning about her connection to the powerful and lucrative Burke family in Ireland, and Haley’s life is suddenly thrown into a tailspin. And on top of everything else, she finds herself a target in a very dangerous game, one in which she doesn’t even know who the players are.
Detective Steven Rothwell has returned home to South Carolina to be near his dad who is sick with cancer. When his series of cases begins to intersect with Haley’s situations, he is quickly drawn into her world, becoming intrigued by and attracted to her.
“Chasing Secrets” is a novel full of twists and turns, leaving you to guess who is after Haley. But it is also much more than just a romantic thriller. Haley herself reminds us to always be a haven of hope to others, and helps us think about the true definition of family. This story shows us the importance of forgiveness and not letting hate take root in our lives and to find contentment, peace and acceptance instead; we can’t change the past, but we can use the past to help others in the present; God, through his infinite grace and mercy, offers perfect justice; and the possibility of but difficulty in overcoming betrayal. A huge theme throughout “Chasing Secrets” is having a new heart — both literally and figuratively.
Eason knows how to add just enough romance to her thrilling tales, and she did it again with “Chasing Secrets.” She is an expert at writing amazing characters who draw you in. Although this story delves more deeply into Haley’s story, readers will recognize many other characters from the prior novels, including Haley’s fellow Elite team members.
My only “complaint”? It’s the final novel of the series.
Five stars out of five.
