“A Powerful Secret” by Dr. Kevin Leman and Jeff Nesbit picks up immediately following the end of the series’ first novel, with Sean Worthington reeling after his brother Will’s unexplained withdrawal from the senate race. Sean doesn’t realize that Will pulled out of the race because of some potentially devastating family secrets — and to mainly protect Sean.
This political intrigue novel continues the story of the Worthington siblings and each of their roles in the aftermath of the American Frontier oil spill in the Arctic Ocean. But it focuses primarily on middle child, Sean, and his journey in finding his identity and place in life.
“A Powerful Secret” deals with the impact of secrets; the theme that to those who are given much, much is required; listening to that still small voice; finding and staying on the right path; and the fact that you can’t change the past but you can be present in the here and now.
And of course, with Dr. Leman being the king of birth order, these novels also deal with the impact of birth order on each of the Worthington children.
The book is filled with political drama, corporate espionage, secret plots and even a mystery character from Langley. It also has a little bit of a religious overtone, as both Will and Sean must decide whether they want to listen to that still small voice and come to God, as their sister Sarah already has.
Dr. Leman and Nesbit do a good job recapping the plot of the original “A Perfect Ambition,” but I would still highly recommend reading that novel first, as it will make it much easier to follow “A Powerful Secret.”
Another great aspect to this series, on a personal level, is the mention of Chautauqua Institution, the family’s summer vacation home where several scenes take place. I grew up going to Chautauqua to spend time with my grandparents and still live only 30 minutes from there in Jamestown, also mentioned in the book, so it was neat to see these locations featured in a fiction series.
Five stars out of five.
