With six long arms and a green face?
What if each foot had fifteen toes,
And on my head grew a blue nose?”
Melody Carlson has written a lovely children’s book “What If?,” illustrated by Bethany Harris. This story will appeal to not only children, but adults as well.
Written in rhyming couplets, Carlson’s text encourages children to use their imaginations to imagine “what if” they were something else — a bug, a tennis shoe, a whale and an alien, for example. It encourages children to think outside their own world and imagine how life could be as something else.
In the end, however, it emphasizes the importance of knowing that the best “what if” is the importance of God creating me to be me.
Besides the fun, rhyming text, this book is filled with adorable and delightful illustrations. Harris creates each piece of art with a watercolor background and colorful and bright pencil drawings. Some of my favorite pages include the outer space, polar bear, and whale in the sea scenes.
“What If?” will quickly become a family favorite!
Five stars out of five.
