Lisa Harris fills her latest novel, “The Traitor’s Pawn,” with heart-pumping action right from the beginning, with deaths, attempted murders, kidnapping, treason and espionage.
After a harrowing and nearly fatal event while Detective Aubrey Grayson is out on a hunting trip with her beloved father-figure Papps, she reconnects with her former best friend, Jack Shannon, who is now an FBI agent. When her situation becomes entangled in an espionage case Jack is working on, they find themselves working together to solve a mystery that just might also involve her estranged father.
But as they work more and more together, they each begin to realize that their past friendship could become somewhat more. As they struggle internally with their feelings for and about each other, they must also overcome past traumas and abandonments and find forgiveness and peace.
“The Traitor’s Pawn” is an incredible romantic thriller, filled with an immense amount of intense situations that leave the reader wondering who the “bad guy” really is, as well as plenty of budding romance situations and times of the characters turning to their faith. Harris does a great job of creating wonderfully relatable characters, filled with flaws and doubts and moments of humanity.
This story has many great themes, like God will remind His people to be still; dealing with and overcoming trauma, as well as betrayal; God never intended this world to be free from suffering; we can’t always see the whole picture, and God has a bigger plan than even we can know; and the need to seek wisdom and discernment.
Major themes deal with justice, redemption and forgiveness (as Jack tells Bree, as he calls her, “Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting everything that happened. It doesn’t mean that everything will suddenly be okay again, and it certainly doesn’t automatically wipe away the hurt. … But it might bring you the freedom you’ve never found.”
This appears to be a standalone novel. Fans of authors like Lynette Eason, Terri Blackstock and Colleen Coble will love “The Traitor’s Pawn.”
Five stars out of five.
