WaterBrook is re-releasing Andrew Peterson’s Wingfeather Saga with new cover art and illustrations, with the first two novels coming out on March 10 and the next two in September 2020.
The second novel, “North! Or Be Eaten,” picks up immediately after the series’ first novel, as the Igiby family trains to move north to the Ice Prairies and fight off the evil Fangs if necessary. They must get to safety, as well as protect the precious Jewels of Anniera from the Fangs.
As siblings Janner, Tink and Leeli, along with their grandfather Podo, mother Nia, friend and book lover Oskar, and uncle Artham begin their journey, their strength and faith is put to the test over and over again as they face trolls, two types of Fangs, the wrong-side-of-the-law Stranders, tunnels and nefarious factories.
Peterson once again builds an incredible story set within an incredible world, filled with imaginary creatures like the rockroach, toothy cows and snickbuzzards. “North! Or Be Eaten” is filled with adventure as well as moments of devastation and moments of hope. Readers will fall in love with the Igiby family, as well as new characters like the brave and feisty Strander girl named Maraly, Podo’s old flame Nurgabog, and the intriguing, swashbuckling Florid Sword.
Besides creating an entertaining and fantastical story, Peterson builds many great lessons in “North! Or Be Eaten,” like dealing with bitterness and shame; overcoming betrayal and learning whom one can trust; seeing the sadness beneath the merriment; finding clarity; scars and their impact; guilt will drive you mad; finding the pinprick of light in the darkness; and believing in the magic of The Maker.
The illustrations in this re-release are fun and glorious, and the cover is sublime.
Fans of the fantastical worlds created by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, The Spiderwick Chronicles, or Matt Mikalatos’ Sunlit Lands series will love these stories.
The tale of Janner’s clan continues with “The Monster in the Hollows,” with its new re-release set to be published in September.
Five stars out of five.
