“ ‘I know who you are. My father told me stories about you. He talked about your hands – hands that created the world surrendered to cruel nails,’ Erik whispered.”
The crazy antics of twins Sadie and Saskia Dopple and Erik Morrissey Ganger continue in “The Great Mogul Diamond.” Erik is now living with Dorcas Potts and Lord Gervez, where Dorcas is training him to be a detective. The twins are once again living with author Muzz Elliott at Spaniards House. Life is pretty good until … they overhear Muzz on the phone discussing murder and being blackmailed.
Once again using comics, traditional text, illustrations and word pictures, “The Great Mogul Diamond” is full of twists and turns. Muzz takes Sadie and Saskia on a “vacation” to Cannes, France, while being secretly followed by Dorcas and Erik and help them. Mysteries occur on the train that strangely mirror the happenings in one of Muzz’s novels; a mysterious Max Taranis follows them; Sadie is drugged and kidnapped; Erik and Dorcas are followed, almost killed and then captured by the mysterious brotherhood, Le Sentier Rouge; and a $70 million diamond is meant to be stolen.
During their journeys, though, Erik finally meets Madame Raphael, as well as the Comforter, a man with scars on his hands who is also called The Man of Good-Bye Friday. He also learns the truth about his father and why he abandoned Erik at the children’s home.
I loved this book. It was definitely my favorite book in the series. At times the plot had an almost Hitchcockian flair! The pacing was great and kept me in suspense until the very end. I’d give it more than five stars if I could.
Five out of five stars.
